Keepers of the Capsule

Keepers of the Capsule is a non-profit organization established in 1990 to assist the guardians or “Keepers” of the Washington Centennial Time Capsule. The Keepers are volunteers who have pledged to preserve the time capsule and enlist new generations of Keepers every 25 years to support the capsule. This chain of stewardship will ensure that the time capsule reaches its final destination, Washington State’s 500th anniversary in 2389.

Washington Centennial Time Capsule

A project of the Washington Centennial Commission, the Washington Centennial Time Capsule was developed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Washington’s admission to the United States of America as its 42nd state on November 11, 1889. The time capsule is located in the rotunda of the state capitol in Olympia, Washington.

Constructed by the Westinghouse Hanford Company, the capsule is a 3,000 pound green safe that contains a series of 16 stainless steel individual time capsules which will be filled with new items every 25 years. All of the capsules are slated to be opened in 2389, the state's 500th birthday.

Where are Keepers From?

Beginning in 1989, The Keepers of the Capsule are recruited based on their 10th Birthday coinciding with a 25 year anniversary of Washington's statehood. Here is where Keepers lived as of 2014.
